Leviathan Rising - Pre Order for Fall 2026

Leviathan Rising is a striking body of work by photographer Eirik Johnson that explores the intersection of global commerce, environmental fragility, and maritime history through photographs made from a sea kayak floating beneath the enormous hulls of cargo vessels along Washington’s Duwamish River. Transforming scale, perspective, and light, Johnson’s images reveal the weathered surfaces of these massive ships, where layers of rust, sediment, diesel, tar, and marine life bear witness to countless oceanic journeys and the far-reaching systems of international trade. The project also includes a series of unique daguerreotype photograms, created with Daniel Carrillo, depicting Japanese glass fishing floats whose ocean-crossing voyages carried them from the Pacific to the shores of the Pacific Northwest. Accompanied by essays from Sylvia Wolf and Sam Hockley-Smith, as well as underwater field recordings captured in the Duwamish, Leviathan Rising offers a compelling meditation on the movement of goods, people, and histories across the Pacific, while highlighting the environmental consequences of our interconnected world.
