Collection: Current Exhibition - The Abiqueños and The Artist

The Abiqueños and The Artist examines Indigenous and non-Indigenous understandings of land and landscape in Abiquiú, New Mexico, through a provoking dialogue of works by the notable Diné and Ho-Chunk photographer Russel Albert Daniels and the eminent American artist Georgia O’Keeffe. Avéshu or Abiquiú is a place that American art scholars have consistently referred to as “O’Keeffe Country.” However, this region is the site of ancestral architecture, sacred sites, and important historical events for Genízaro peoples who have lived in this region for centuries, long before O’Keeffe arrived. In this exhibition, these disparate artworks are united to provide depictions of Abiquiú through different perspectives; together they work to convey a deeper understanding of the identities, aesthetics, and the intergenerational ties to Genízaro homelands. The Abiqueños and The Artist is part of the [re]Frame: Haub Family Collection of Western American Art project at Tacoma Art Museum. This exhibition is organized by Tacoma Art Museum and curated by Patricia Norby.
