The French impressionists were the original angry young men, dispossessed by the artistic authorities of France and seeking an audience, buyers, and a way to exhibit and sell their work. Though today their paintings may seem pretty and nostalgic, in their day they were revolutionary and at the cutting edge, evoking bile and critical merriment in the press. Monet, Renoir, Degas, and Their Circle explores the fascinating origins of the movement in France and its evolution in the United States and the Pacific Northwest. This exhibition catalogue features an essay on the French Impressionists by Executive Director and co-curator, David Setford; an essay discussing collecting French Impressionism in the Pacific Northwest by co-curator Margaret Bullock; and, an illustrated checklist of the works from the exhibition.
